Pell Case Reminds the World Why Cardinals Wear Red

“This is what the red color of their habits means: the color of blood and love.” —Pope Benedict XVI Lent is a time in which we relive spiritually the events of Jesus’ sham trials for the crimes of blasphemy and sedition and his crucifixion. It’s also a time in which we ponder his words from the Last Supper, “No slave is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20).

A Secret Database of Child Abuse

A former Jehovah's Witness is using stolen documents to expose allegations that the religion has kept hidden for decades. In March 1997, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the nonprofit organization that oversees the Jehovah’s Witnesses, sent a letter to each of its 10,883 U.S. congregations, and to many more congregations worldwide.

Church on the rocks

THE Catholic Church is having problems, at times are scandalous and at other times horrible. We believe that Christ founded His Church, the Catholic Church on the Rock, so strong that Christ said the “gates of hell will not prevail against it.” But now the Church is, well, to use the metaphor, “on the rocks”, meaning facing serious problems. Two Cardinals had been sacked; one was sentenced to imprisonment and one is awaiting his fate. Several bishops had been summoned by US prosecutors to explain some “improprieties” and even criminal cover-up.

German theologian claims Catholic liturgy promotes ‘clericalism,’ fosters abuse crisis

Benedikt Kranemann, a German Catholic theologian from the University of Erfurt, says the role of the priest in the liturgy may have contributed to the sexual abuse crisis raging throughout the Church. The liturgy, he says, has a potentially negative influence upon the priest's own understanding of his office and his role, thus possibly fostering his “phantasies of power” and “clericalism.”

VALERIE SCHULTZ: I'm emerging from a spiritual dry spell

Mental flashbacks to 2002 have plagued my brain lately. That was the year, dramatized in the movie "Spotlight," when a series of Boston Globe articles exposed the scandal of the clergy’s sexual abuse of children in the local Catholic Church. In 2002 I worked for the church across the country in California, and just answering the phone in the parish office in the days and weeks and months of that explosive reporting was harrowing. Angry and betrayed people said terrible things, for which there was no defense.

Covering child abuse in the Catholic Church under a court gag order

In February 2016, Lucie Morris-Marr broke news of a police probe into allegations that Australia’s Cardinal George Pell, the third most powerful clergyman in the Catholic Church, had sexually abused children. She had been investigating Pell for 10 months; it would be another three years before she would report the outcome of that investigation and the subsequent trial. In that time, Morris-Marr saw her reporting labeled part of a “witch hunt,” weathered calls for an investigation into her sourcing by the Church, and lost her job at the Melbourne newspaper that published her scoop.

Why defending Cardinal Pell is a problem

In late February, the church pledged to put the victims of abuse first, to listen to them with an open heart, to root out the culture of protecting priests accused of abuse. Now a number of lay Catholics are undercutting all these good and overdue intentions by challenging the guilty verdict of Australian Cardinal George Pell. Let’s be clear about it: Nobody can claim to know conclusively whether Cardinal Pell is guilty of the charges put against him except for the two people alive who were in that room on the day in question.

Sexual Assault Attorney Mick Grewal Discusses Widespread Sexual Assault Allegations Against Clergy – & the Fight to Hold Corporate Entities Responsible Over 100 priests who have been accused of sexually abusing children were named in a list provided by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. This list was made public because the diocese felt it would help the Survivors of abuse heal.

Birds of a feather…

Due to sex abuse scandals, Francis has 'decapitated' one cardinal and if true to his word, two others -- and probably more -- may also lose their red hats. The credibility of the Roman Catholic Church's collective leadership (i.e. its bishops) has been all but completely destroyed, thanks to the hierarchy's general ineptitude in dealing openly, honestly and effectively with priests who have sexually abused minors.

Catholic Archbishop, on His Hands and Knees, Begged for Forgiveness Over Abuse

When the Archdiocese of Hartford released a list this year identifying 48 priests accused of sexual abuse, five of them had served at the same church: St. George’s, in the small coastal town of Guilford. One had been a pastor there for more than a decade, baptizing children and hearing confessions. Some in the large congregation were deeply hurt.

Catholic cardinals implicated in sex abuse, cover-ups

The conviction of French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin for failing to report a known pedophile priest to police deepens the crisis confronting an already discredited Catholic Church hierarchy. The verdict handed down by magistrates Thursday shows the church’s once-untouchable “princes” increasingly are judged accountable for priests who abuse children and the superiors who allowed the abuse to continue.

Webster woman alleges sexual abuse by nun, settles with Rochester diocese

Christina Grana can’t forget the principal she and her classmates at St. Margaret Mary School in Irondequoit called “Hawk.” “She was the monster in my dreams,” Grana recalled the other day. “She was the monster in my closet. She was the monster under my bed.” She was Sister Janice Nadeau, a nun described by those who worked and lived with her as a “harsh,” “stern,” “aggressive,” and “heavy-handed” school administrator who was known to “pick on” children.

Disgraced Australian Cardinal Pell sued for another sex offense

More skeletons resurface related to 1970s child abuse claims against former Melbourne archbishop. The plaque celebrating Cardinal George Pell's tenure as Archbishop of Sydney at St Mary's Cathedral is seen splattered with green paint in Sydney, Australia, March 5. (Photo by EPA/Mick Tsikas Australia And New Zealand Out/MaxPPP) A civil claim was filed against convicted sex abuser Cardinal George Pell at the Supreme Court of Victoria in Australia on March 7.

Seal of confession issues often misunderstood

A New Zealand canon lawyer has discussed, in a peer-reviewed book, the Church’s law on the seal of confession, with particular reference to sexual abuse of minors. Msgr Brendan Daly, judicial vicar for the Tribunal of the Catholic Church in New Zealand, had a paper published in Roman Replies and CLSA Advisory Opinions 2018 (Washington DC: Canon Law Society of America) last year. Msgr Daly stated in the paper that many issues concerning the seal of confession are misunderstood.

Catholic Church aware of claims against George Pell since 1996

The claims were lurid and unverified so Helen Last, the counsellor hired by the Catholic Church in Melbourne, Australia to assist victims of clerical abuse, agonised before reporting them to her superiors. It was 1996 and the newly appointed archbishop, George Pell, had just set up the Melbourne Response to handle the rising numbers of sex abuse claims received by the archdiocese.

Geoffrey Robertson QC: The clerical abuse of tens of thousands of children is a crime against humanity by any definition.

News of the conviction and remanding in custody of Cardinal George Pell, number three in the Vatican, for the rape of small boys in a sacristy came as a fitting end to a papal summit on child abuse which achieved nothing. It had begun with other cardinals attributing the problem to homosexuals in the priesthood. Of course, the reality is that priests abuse small boys, not because they are gay, but because they have the opportunity.

Survivor Shares Tragedy of Abuse and What Must Be Done to Prevent It

Shaun Dougherty discusses with the Register the deep trauma of clerical sex abuse, and what he believes the Church must do to bring perpetrators to justice and ensure such crimes never happen again. In the 1980s, Shaun Dougherty was sexually abused from the age of 10 to 13 by a priest in the diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Pennsylvania.  The priest, George Koharchik, who was a religion teacher and sports coach at the local school, abused many others before he was eventually laicized in 2012.

When children cry out

He has consistently pleaded innocent and vehemently denied that such acts of sexual abuse against the two boys, 13-year old altar servers, ever happened. A jury, however, found the cardinal guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Pope Francis has ordered that the cardinal be removed from all public ministries and never to have any contact with children.

No one is above the law — not even Catholic priests

Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy.  From the Vatican’s website, “The Church is celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy, a time of grace, peace, conversion and joy.  It is meant for everyone: people of every age, from far and near.  There are no walls or distances which can prevent the Father’s mercy from reaching and embracing us.  The Holy Door is now open in Rome and in all the diocese of the world.

My anger with George Pell has been replaced by immense sadness

I have been angry with Cardinal George Pell for a long time. That anger was first stirred by his absolute disdain for extending compassion to people living with Aids, and also by his refusal to accept queer people into Catholic fellowship. I was also made furious by his perverting of the teachings of the Gospels, most clearly visible in his prioritising of political alliances with the rich and the powerful rather than offering ministry and care to those most in need.

Perth Catholic Archbishop Timothy Costelloe urges Church to stand by child sex abuse victims, survivors

Perth’s top Catholic Archbishop Timothy Costelloe says the conviction of Cardinal George Pell is a reminder of the need for the church to focus on the victims of child sexual abuse. In a pastoral letter published to worshippers today, Archbishop Costelloe says he will refrain from making any comments on Cardinal Pell’s “situation” until all legal appeals are complete, but says the Church must never minimise the gravity of even one instance of sexual abuse of a minor.

Pope talks tough on sex abuse, but zero-tolerance policy must follow

It has been one year since Michael Whalen went public with accusations of abuse by Rev. Norbert F. Orsolits, and Orsolits admitted to Buffalo News reporter Jay Tokasz that he had molested “probably dozens” of young boys. That began the uncovering of decades of abuse involving more than 100 priests in the Diocese of Buffalo, a harrowing story that is still unfolding.

Cardinal Sin: Spare a thought for the victims in the George Pell case

WHAT would I do if I went forward and said such a thing about an archbishop? “It’s something I’ve carried for the whole of my life and coming forward took ... courage, much later on for me, to be able to even think about coming forward.” These were the words of a man in his mid-30s recalling in distressing detail to a jury an encounter he had in his teens that he would rather forget, but can’t no matter how hard he tries.

Calls for Vatican to protect NZ children from sexual abuse

An international group targeting church abuse is calling on the Vatican to protect children in New Zealand from sexual predators. Ending Clergy Abuse or ECA Global has issued a resolution after meeting on the fringes of the Pope's four-day abuse summit in Rome. It is calling on the Vatican to authorise this country's bishops to tackle abusers regardless of the church's internal rules.

How the Catholic Church has handled cover-ups and sex abuse

Q: Are the police called in suspected sex abuse cases? A: Irish bishops who considered adopting a mandatory reporting policy in 1997 received a letter from the Vatican warning in-house Church investigations could be compromised. But nowadays, in countries where clergy are required to report child abuse, bishops and superiors of religious orders are supposed to notify police. However, the policy is non-binding and was only articulated publicly in 2010.
