Elder domestic violence focus of annual conference

About 45 people who work with victims of elder abuse gathered Friday at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church for the annual Domestic Violence Gets Old conference.
The annual symposium organized by The Task Force Against Elder Domestic Violence aims to raise awareness of the abuse elderly people suffer from their partners. The elderly are subject to physical, financial, sexual abuse and neglect, officials said. Organizers said because crimes are underreported, there are few crime statistics regarding people over 60 years old.

Survivors of child sexual abuse find support in SAMSN

Shane McNamara is a firm believer that even when the odds seem stacked against you, it’s still possible to win with the right team. A survivor of child sexual abuse, Mr McNamara knows the isolation many male victims feel, as well as the lack of support.
But he also knows that living a good life is possible. Everyone deserves a chance to enjoy life. It’s not all doom and gloom. There is a lot of good things in the world, there is a lot of good people,” Mr McNamara said.

Woman attacked in 'brazen' sexual assault

Police have launched an investigation into a "brazen" sexual assault of a 71-year-old woman in her Palmerston North home last night. Manawatu Police said a man entered the woman's home in the Fitzroy area of Church St about 6pm.
He allegedly attacked the woman and sexually assaulted her before leaving the property. The woman immediately called police who quickly attended the scene, Detective Sergeant Gary Milligan said.

'I'll walk with you' campaign for New Brighton

A show of support for Australia's Muslim community that went viral after the Sydney siege has inspired a Christchurch woman to start a similar campaign in her community. Kirsty McMillan started the #illwalkwithyouNB campaign on Facebook following a similar move in Australia after the Martin Place siege last week.
McMillan said she wanted to start a similar campaign in New Brighton to support elderly or anxious residents who felt unsafe walking alone in the seaside suburb. New Brighton was "generally a fantastic place with a fantastic community", but McMillan said she had heard of incidents where elderly people had been "targeted" recently.

Elder Abuse

In April 2004 in New Zealand, a report from the organisation Age Concern drew attention to the fact that "...about a quarter of elderly people who put someone they trust in charge of their personal and financial affairs are then abused by that person."
Elder abuse and neglect is defined by Age Concern New Zealand as "when a person aged 65 years or more experiences harmful physical, psychological, sexual, material or social effects caused by the behaviour of another person with whom they have a relationship implying trust."
