Why nuns are silent about sexual abuse within the Catholic church in India: It's never taken seriously

"If it comes out, it will be like a tsunami," the nun Manju Kulapuram said, earlier this year, about the rampant sexual abuse of women by the men of the Catholic church in India. Evidently, Kulapuram was onto something — and it’s across denominations, nor confined just to the Catholic church. Unlike other work places, which in theory are meant to have set up mandatory internal complaints committees, there is no formal institution in place that addresses sexual abuse inflicted by members of the clergy.

Road to Recovery - bout Us

Since its founding, R2R has assisted victims/survivors from different age groups, ethnicities, locations, organizations, and socio-economic classes.  Sexual abuse is of epidemic proportions worldwide.  R2R travels throughout America and beyond its borders to help victims/survivors get on the road to recovery.  We have worked with those who have been abused on boy scout and girl scout camping trips, in churches and church facilities, in homes, in university dormitories and athletic arenas, in prisons, in schools, in therapists’ offices, on public and private transportation vehicles, and a host of other locations.  Sexual abuse occurs wherever there are people.  R2R meets victims/survivors wherever they are in the country and wherever they are in their journey to recovery. We believe that victims/survivors are more comfortable on their own turf, especially in the early stages of recovery, so we make it a point to meet face to face with victim/survivors whenever possible.

Dear Brother O’Neill . . . a former Christian Brothers pupil writes

There is nothing ‘historical’ about the child abuse I suffered 45 years ago – the kind your order now seems to want to forget all about. My anguish continues.  A reader writes an open letter to Br Hugh O’Neill, superior general of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, in Rome
Dear Superior General, – Only last year, in my late 50s, I woke up to the exact nature and general effects of abuse I suffered at the hands of two of your Christian Brothers here in Ireland before I was 12. One is dead, the other alive in Ireland and living a secular life outside your congregation.

Bamboozled: How Catholic hospitals get away with letting pensions go broke

The catholic church nuns and priest... made blood money on their hands... by the sweet of children... and now their are making money from the old age Pensioners... Ann
================================
Pensions have been on their way out for a long time. They're expensive for employers, and they require lots of rule-following and reporting.
But the sponsors of pension funds run by Catholic hospitals have taken advantage of an IRS rule, which, in effect, gives zero protection to retirees if the pension goes bust.

FL--Victims blast new Tampa/St. Pete Catholic bishop

We are disappointed that Bishop Gregory Parkes of Pensacola-Tallahassee has been promoted to head Florida's second-largest market as the fifth bishop of St Petersburg. We disapprove of his handling of a 2013 predator priest case and see no signs that might indicate that he be any better than his predecessor in dealing with the church’s continuing child sex abuse and cover up crisis.
In 2013, Parkes waited five weeks before suspending an accused priest, Fr. Michael A. Cherup.

Child abuse survivor worries community 'fatigued' by issue

A child abuse survivor says his biggest fear is that the momentum generated by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will dissipate, stopping any meaningful reform.
Peter Gogarty was abused by a Catholic priest in the New South Wales Hunter region as a child and now spends his time advocating for other survivors.

The former head of the Scottish inquiry into historic child abuse, who resigned in July, is to sue ministers.

Ex-Liverpool FC footballer Paul Stewart has broken a 40-year silence to share the trauma of his horrific child sex abuse ordeal,

2 new sex abuse lawsuits filed against former priests

Two new child sex abuse lawsuits, filed Wednesday afternoon, allege that deceased Catholic priest Antonio C. Cruz and former priest Louis Brouillard separately molested two former altar boys in the 1960s and 1970s.
Brouillard, the Archdiocese of Agana and as many as 50 other defendants are named in the latest batch of lawsuits, filed by attorney David Lujan, of the law firm Lujan & Wolff. Cruz, who died in 1986 at the age of 62, is not named as a defendant.

Threat of hell is real for not being faithful to God, pope says

At his daily morning Mass, Pope Francis reflects on death, hell and the final judgment. “If each of us is faithful to the Lord, when death comes, we will say ‘Come, Sister Death,’ like St. Francis. It won’t frighten us,” he said.  Death and final judgment before the Lord are not frightening if you live being faithful to God, Pope Francis said.
“It will do us good to think about this: ‘Well, what will that day be like when I am before Jesus? When he will ask me about the talents he gave me, what I did with them,’” the pope said Nov. 22 during morning Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he lives.

Church with rapist leading worship postpones merger with second church facing sex abuse claims

Two Tennessee churches — both with current or former leaders connected to sexual abuse — have decided to restructure a merger in light of recent allegations.
Earlier this week, the Memphis Police Department confirmed that it was investigating a city of Memphis library employee, Christopher Carwile, after he was accused of sexually assaulting at least three children while working as a youth minister at the Church at Schilling Farms (formerly known as Immanuel Baptist Church) 18 years ago.

Bishop urged to 'care' for alleged abusers

Newcastle's Anglican bishop was told at his consecration that he should meet with a couple accused of having three-way sex with a teenage boy and "care for them", a royal commission has heard.
Bishop Greg Thompson, who has been public about his own alleged abuse at the hands of clergy, says he quickly identified a strong narrative in the diocese that priests, including defrocked Dean of Newcastle Graeme Lawrence, had been unfairly disciplined over child sexual abuse allegations.

Talking Point: Child sex abuse scheme fails on too many levels

LIKE many Tasmanians, I was shocked and appalled by evidence given at the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse.
All abuse of children is horrendous, but it is particularly abhorrent for abuse to be committed by people entrusted with the care of those children. I welcome the Turnbull Government’s decision to fund trauma counselling and other support, and to appoint an advisory committee of survivors and their supporters.

Brent Hawkes’ lawyers concede teens drank alcohol at pastor’s home in ’70s

KENTVILLE, N.S.—Brent Hawkes’ lawyers conceded Tuesday that teenagers drank alcohol at the Toronto pastor’s Nova Scotia trailer during the mid 1970s, much to the prosecutor’s surprise.
Crown lawyer Bob Morrison had intended to call rebuttal witnesses to testify that other students, and not only the three witnesses who testified last week at Hawkes’ gross indecency trial, drank alcohol at his Greenwood, N.S., home.

Federal government ‘dragging its heels’ on child abuse redress scheme

Victoria says the government is keeping survivors in the dark as they await further detail on how scheme would work.  Anti-child abuse campaigners have urged federal and state governments to avoid playing political games with the national redress scheme, after Victoria said the federal government for “dragging its heels” and keeping survivors in the dark.
The council of Australian governments meeting early next month could be critical to the future of the national redress scheme, which was a core recommendation of the royal commission in September last year.

Child abuse royal commission: defrocked Anglican dean denies leading group of paedophile priests

Vic institutions accountable for abuse

Lawyers say other states should follow Victoria's lead in forcing institutions to prove they took steps to protect children under their care from being abused.
Organisations in Victoria will have to prove they took reasonable steps to protect children under their care from abuse in a move that will make it easier for victims to sue institutions for damages. Victoria is the first state to introduce laws creating a duty of care for organisations so they can be held accountable for the abuse of children.

Carmelites: A Gift of God that Inspires

Message by Archbishop Savio Hon Tai Fai, SDB
We all were saddened by the news that the Carmelite Sisters were to leave the Island. It was absolutely a very difficult move both for them and for the faithful on Guam. The Archdiocese has been so privileged to have them among us ever since 1966. With their dedication to contemplation and prayer, the Carmelite community has become a power station for Church activities.

During the summer of 1968, Robert and Pamela DiBenedetto spent four weeks at sleepaway camp in upstate New York. The siblings, twins from Brooklyn, were twelve years old, and their camps were on opposite sides of a lake. One morning, Pamela woke up in her cabin with a swollen arm, an injury that puzzled the camp nurse: Pamela had not fallen or tripped, been bitten or stung. At the end of the season, however, she learned that her brother had broken his arm across the lake the day her swelling began.

Former priest spared jail for abuse for second time

A former priest who sexually abused his niece more than 30 years ago has avoided jail for a second time, despite an appeal by prosecutors in a case described as “rare and exceptional”.
The 60-year-old man, whose details cannot be published to protect the victim’s identity, had pleaded guilty to 12 counts of sexually assaulting his niece on dates between 1979 and 1985 when she was aged between six and 13 and he was in his 20s.

Vatican--Two controversial prelates are “demoted;” Victims respond

Cardinal Raymond Burke and Cardinal George Pell will no longer be on the Rome-basedCongregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. [Update] Glare of the spotlight

In this hour of Reveal, we’re going to revisit an Oscar-winning movie about The Boston Globe’s investigative team that exposed the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal: “Spotlight.” We’ll take you behind the scenes of that investigation, look at the legacy of the groundbreaking story and see how other journalists went on to expose more crimes by Catholic priests around the world.
First up, we tell you what happened after the “Spotlight” movie ended and how The Boston Globe continued to expose cover-ups in the Catholic Church.

Tracking a Church paedophilia case from Dakar to Quebec

Following a series of paedophilia scandals in the Catholic Church in recent years, FRANCE 24 reporters investigated the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic religious community that has been sending missionaries to Africa for nearly a century. In Senegal we met with an alleged victim of abuse before tracking down the accused in Quebec.

The Royal Commission and the Catholic Church’s Dysfunctional Governance

In May 2016, the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse released Issues Paper 11 – Catholic Church Final Hearing, inviting submissions for its final Catholic Church hearing scheduled for three weeks 6-24 February 2017. That hearing will review the horror of clerical child sexual abuse and the Church’s cover-up and protection of abusing clergy, including “factors that may have affected the institutional response of the Catholic Church to child sexual abuse.” The hearing will doubtless attempt to answer the question asked by many Catholics: How could the leadership of our Church behave in this way whilst continuing to espouse and teach Christian values?

Catholic Church and the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The following are Extracts from a submission by Patrick Parkinson to the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Issues Paper 11
In this submission,, Patrick Parkinson says that  “It would be easy to write the problems off as a few ‘bad apples’;  however, the problems that have brought the Church to the very edge of disaster and beyond, trashing its reputation as a moral leader, were never just because of a few bad apples. The problems were institutional and cultural.”

Are Catholics Forbidden to Criticize Priests? YES

This is not another post about Fr. Pavone, although it was in a discussion of that topic on Facebook that someone made the claim that Catholics are “not allowed” to criticize priests.
I am going to limit myself, therefore, to that specific claim. I do not, here, address the topic of whether criticism of priests is imprudent, or the extent to which it must be done in charity, or privately, with respect for the office, and so on. I address only the claim that it is “not allowed.”

An Ohio lawyer hypnotized six female clients and then molested them. Now he’s going to prison.

It was a routine visit to the lawyer’s office following her divorce. The Shieffield Village, Ohio, woman visited the now 59-year-old Michael W. Fine, her lawyer, to discuss a custody issue. They chatted, and she paid him a $1,500 fee.

VICTORIA WHITE: Survivors of abuse deserve far more than a ‘deafening silence’

IT’S THE biggest sex abuse case ever taken against an individual in this country. Some of it happened in the biggest church on the island. But it doesn’t matter because the Church is not Catholic.
Patrick O’Brien’s up to 1,000 counts of abusing young boys in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin over 40 years is not a national story because it can’t be used to tell the story of adults from Catholic homes and because they are the majority they are the only people who count.

Sexual abuse by Catholic clergy Menu: How the Church initially reacted

When the moral panic concerning widespread abuse of children by Roman Catholic clergy surfaced in early 2002. many people asked why the Church hierarchy allowed the abuse to continue so long. In 2009, retired Bishop John Selby Spong of the Episcopal Church, USA, suggested:
"I am quite certain that sexually abusive priests were well known to Catholic authorities for years. There was a history of bishops and archbishops moving offending clergy to another jurisdiction rather than confronting the issue. My guess is that both the abuse and the cover-up were quite systemic, far more prevalent than has yet been admitted or faced. Perhaps that is the clue to their allowing it to continue. If it was as widespread as we now believe, it must have involved people in high places, including bishops, archbishops and cardinals. A thorough investigation and a complete and honest admission might well have constituted so severe a threat to the life and integrity of that noble institution that they deemed their needs better served by dishonesty rather than honesty, by cover-up rather than admission. Of course, in the long run, the integrity of the Church itself is eroded and the exodus of members that begins as a trickle and ends with a flood."

Pope John Paul II denounces 'evil' sex priests

Pope John Paul II has broken his silence on a wave of sex scandals which threaten to undermine the Church's claim to moral authority. He said these brothers had succumbed to "the most grievous form of evil at work in the world". We are personally and profoundly afflicted by the sins of some of our brothers

Crimes of the Father review: Tom Keneally tackles abuse in the Catholic church

There are a growing number of novels prepared to tell the story of paedophilia within various church communities, not least the Catholic Church. Few of them have needed to stray far from the grim facts. Andrew O'Hagan's Be Near Me and John Boyne's The Long History of Loneliness are just two examples. Both these books draw the line between good and bad clergy. But they also have solid reason to call into question an entire ecclesiastical culture. They are valuable books but they don't make comfortable reading.

November 2016 – Reading, Pa. – After more than 40 years of struggling to get the Catholic Church to “acknowledge the crimes” that were committed against her, a Pennsylvania woman who says she was raped by two priests and a policeman while attending a Catholic high school in Baltimore was recently awarded more than $40,000 from an Archdiocese of Baltimore funding program aimed at “promoting healing for . . . victims of abuse.”
The $40,000-plus payment was accompanied by a letter of apology from an Archdiocesan official who wrote to the victim: “I am sorry for the pain you have experienced.”

A Victorian redress scheme for institutional child abuse - public consultation paper

The Family and Community Development Committee of the Victorian Parliament’s Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations delivered its final report, Betrayal of Trust, on 13 November 2013.
Betrayal of Trust suggested that the government should consider creating another way for survivors of institutional child abuse to bring claims of abuse against institutions, instead of requiring people to bring their claims to court. Recommendation 28.1 of Betrayal of Trust therefore proposed what is commonly known as a 'redress scheme', normally established to deliver financial payments and other benefits as an alternative to traditional avenues of litigation.

Common misconceptions about the Baylor sexual assault scandal

The media coverage of Baylor University’s sexual assault scandal continues, and I give thanks that the outside world is keeping the world’s largest Baptist university in the spotlight. In one of the more recent news accounts, the headline proclaims that Baylor’s scandal is “far worse than previously disclosed.”
This “far worse” reality should come as no surprise to anyone who read the Pepper Hamilton investigatory report, released last May, because the horror of the scandal’s scope was always right there, both in the lines and between the lines. As one Dallas radio host recently said: “We knew it was all going to come out someday. It was a matter of time.”

TX--Victims blast new Baylor website on sexual violence

A gang rape has happened each of the last four years at Baylor University in Texas. On a new website, the school’s president pledges to be “more transparent” about sexual violence on campus. But we’re highly skeptical.
The very top of the website shows a defensive posting that criticizes one media outlet for its coverage of the Baylor scandal. That’s hardly “transparent” or encouraging.
