Child abuse victim speaks out against Cardinal Pell and Catholic Church

A Dunedin man who was sexually abused by Catholic priests in New Zealand and Australia has labelled allegations against Cardinal George Pell "disgusting".
Darryl Smith was sexually abused while attending Catholic schools in both New Zealand and Australia.
He has spoken out about the allegations made against Pell, who is accused of groping boys while he was a priest in Ballarat in the 1970s.

Increase in child abuse numbers 'dreadful' - Labour

The Government's latest report card for the public service shows an increase in the number of children and young people being assaulted - a trend that Labour describes as "dreadful".
One of National's 10 targets for the public service was to reduce the number of children being abused by 5 per cent, to approximately 3000 children, before 2017. An update released this week showed that 3144 children were physically abused in the year to March, compared to 3111 the previous year.

Man robbed of his innocence by nun speaks out decades later about his quest for justice

Why don't you hear about rape of children (Boys and Girls) by nuns and women??... because the shame and guilt is so much greater... than being raped by priest and men... the nuns and women are suppose be the gentle ones... but how wrong you all are... they were mean, vicious. cruel women... still today... it is very hard for people to talk about women and nuns... raping innocent children and teens... and it is harder for us to talk about it... because NO ONE wants to know about these females... who hide behind their image of being the gentle ones... and we are forever locked away with their image and names within us... god it is so hard to put this abuse of our childhood away... it tears at you every day and night..  Ann

Spotlight film encourages victims to disclose sexual abuse in New Zealand

A Hollywood film has prompted new disclosures of historical sexual abuse suffered at the hands of religious officials in New Zealand.
Thirty new clients sought the services and support of the Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust following the release of Oscar-winning best picture Spotlight.  The film told the true story of a team of journalists from the Boston Globe, who exposed a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Catholic clergy through their Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation.

Predator priests and pay outs - why the church investigates its own

Wellington human rights lawyer Sonja Cooper's firm has taken on the state and previously religious organisations over claims children were abused in their care. Every surface in Sonja Cooper's Wellington office is swamped with boxes full of secrets.
Each wall  is lined with folders, and her shelves are stacked with cartons full of the worst memories of more than 700 New Zealanders' lives. But the human rights lawyer cannot talk about what's in the boxes.

21 Former altar boy sues church over alleged sex abuse

A 53-year-old man is suing the Catholic Church and former Guam priest Louis Brouillard, alleging Brouillard sexually abused him more than 40 years ago.
The man, identified by his initials R.P. to protect his identity, was an altar boy for San Miguel Catholic Church in Talofofo from when he was 7 years old to about 13 years old. R.P. attended an overnight event hosted by the Boy Scouts to recruit members in 1973 or 1974. He was around 10 years old at the time and he and his cousin were given a two-man tent. The event was held at Ipan beach.

Dolan: Pell’s response to abuse charges shows ‘mettle of a great man’

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York said he wants to "stick with" his old friend Cardinal George Pell of Australia, who's facing criminal charges of sexual abuse. He also said the Catholic Church needs to be more aggressive in speaking out about anti-Christian persecution – and suggested that Pope Francis may have a unique capacity to call out offenders.

How 'house of horror' investigation brought Jersey abuse to light

Murder suspicions at Haut de la Garenne proved false alarm but led to exposure of abuse there and at other children’s homes.  In 2008 the former children’s home Haut de la Garenne on Jersey became a focus of global attention when police discovered what they believed to be fragments of a human skull.
The building, at that time a youth hostel, was dubbed “the house of horror” as scores of other bone fragments were unearthed and lurid reports surfaced that shackles, restraints, “punishment rooms” and a bath stained with blood had been found. The fear was that children, perhaps many, had been tortured and killed and their remains concealed.

Protect the vulnerable

THE rising cases of sexual abuse on minors has become a major concern in our community. It has always been a major topic of debate in our very own family, churches, Government, private sectors and among many other stakeholders.
Together, they continue to work together to map out ways and efforts to combat the issue. It is sad also to note that despite the many efforts to counter this inhumane behaviour, the number of cases continue to increase and more sexual abuse cases are brought before the courts.
And the question remains, what can be done to end sexual abuse in Fiji?

The role of a double life in a priest

One question which baffles most women is that of a double life. How can a priest: who is so near God; breathes God; thinks about God; prays to God; speaks about God etc…can lead a double life? He tells others what to do and how to avoid sin, yet he breaks his promise (or vow) and makes love to a woman and feels ok!!! To make matters worse, in some cases, he has more than one woman! That’s why some people call priests womanizers.
One has to remember that a priest is a public person. It’s so difficult for normal men to have a hidden lover let alone a priest. Yet some of them are most successful in having a hidden lover.

Cardinal George Pell Returns to Australia, Charged With Sexual Offenses

SYDNEY, Australia — Cardinal George Pell returned on Monday to his native Australia, where he has been charged with sexual offenses, as a commission released a new trove of documents from its investigation into the Roman Catholic Church’s past response to abuse allegations in the country.
Cardinal Pell, 76, one of the highest-ranking figures in the church’s global hierarchy, was met by the Australian Federal Police at Sydney’s international airport, where his flight from Singapore landed just before 6 a.m. The cardinal had staggered his flights from Rome on his doctors’ advice, a spokesman said.

Maitland-Newcastle Catholic diocese exposed after 'fiercely resisting" a child sex victim in court

MAITLAND-Newcastle Catholic diocese “fiercely resisted” paying compensation to the victim of a notorious child sex offender teacher in 2005 despite internal legal advice in 1990 conceding his victims would have “a pretty good case” to sue the church, royal commission documents released on Monday show.
The teacher’s trail of destruction through the Hunter over several decades included a parting gesture to the church a year before his death – his evidence to the 2005 court case saying he warned the diocese he was a convicted child sex offender before it employed him in 1974.

Second woman accuses Brouillard of sex abuse; 3 other abuse cases filed

Former Archdiocese of Agana priest Louis Brouillard has again been accused of sexual abuse, by a woman who said Brouillard abused her when she was a girl in the 1960s, and a man who said he was abused as a boy in the 1970s.
Four clergy sex abuse lawsuits were filed Tuesday in the Superior Court of Guam — two naming Brouillard, one naming defrocked priest Raymond Cepeda, and one naming Saint Anthony Catholic School music teacher Raymond Caluag as the abusers. The archdiocese is listed as a defendant in all four cases.

Fears that George Pell might not get a fair go drive calls for judge-only trials

Senior lawyers say Victoria should allow judge-only trials in some cases, after expressing concerns Cardinal George Pell would not get a fair hearing on historic sex charges.
As Cardinal Pell returned to Australia on Monday ahead of his July 26 court appearance, two QCs not connected to his case have raised doubts about the 76-year-old getting a fair hearing, should his case proceed to a jury trial.

Editorial: Time to welcome married priests

It’s been another scandal-ridden year for the Vatican, and June proved particularly grim. Last month, Vatican police reported they had raided an apartment owned by the Holy See and arrested an aide to one of Pope Francis’ key advisers. Reports say the police, who had been tipped off by neighbors, walked into a cocaine-fueled orgy.
Francis was enraged at the salacious report, especially since it came on the heels of news that Australian Cardinal George Pell, the third-ranking official at the Vatican, had been charged by Melbourne officials with sexual assault. While Pell strenuously denies all allegations, he is due to appear in an Australian court on July 26.

APNewsBreak: Priest who abused child still working with kids

CHICAGO — The Claretians Roman Catholic order has settled a lawsuit from a man sexually abused as a 6-year-old by a teenager who later became a prominent priest in Chicago, confirming in the settlement obtained by The Associated Press that the longtime cleric recently left the priesthood.
But Bruce Wellems, 60, still works as executive director of a non-profit that offers youth mentoring, alternative schooling and other programs for children, according to a staff list at the Peace and Education Coalition. Its head office is also located in the same southwest side Chicago church where he served as priest for two decades.
