Black 'lynching' ad, Catholic Church sex abuse, elections

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is expected to sign legislation on Friday raising the maximum penalty for fraternity hazing to a felony, carrying up to seven years in prison. The U.S. government on Friday charged a Russian national with playing a key financial role in a Kremlin-backed plan to conduct "information warfare" against the United States, including ongoing attempts to influence next month's congressional elections. Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, 44, became the first person charged with a crime for attempting to interfere in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, according to a government official with knowledge of the investigation.

Vatican's Argentina archives ready to be shown to victims of dictatorship crimes

The Vatican and Argentina’s bishops have finished cataloguing their archives from the country’s dictatorship era, and will soon make them available to victims and their relatives who have long accused the church of complicity with the military rulers.
A joint statement on Tuesday said the process of digitizing the archives had been completed and that procedures to access the information would be forthcoming. No date was set, and the opening for now is restricted to victims, detainees, their relatives and the religious superiors of victims who were priests or nuns.

How Powerful Men Get Away With It

You are not powerful... you are a spineless wonder... who verbal abusers young girls and women... I don't know why the women in USA... with their loved ones... don't stand up against trump... I am sure that all honest people in America... will stand up to him... and boot him out of becoming the president of USA...
watch out world... the 3rd. world war is about to begin... trump has already told the world... which countries and people he hates... so we will not have to wait... after you all get down on your knees and vote him in...
you are all bowing down now... by the way you go to his meetings... and I can not believe my eyes... how much shit... you let this pig say and do... under your ever eyes... come on America... you can do better than this- I hope...  Ann

Before I wrote a book on Trump, I wrote one about the Catholic priest abuse scandals. And I see a heck of a lot of similarities.
Although they have never been recognized as a constituency, millions of American voters—men as well as women—have been sexually abused, and for them, the presidential campaign has become a riveting drama and a source of fresh pain. They recognize themselves in the women who have come forward to report gross encounters with Donald Trump, and they see in the much of the response to their charges a familiar kind of deflection and denial.

Melissa Mark-Viverito, New York Council Speaker, Reveals She Was Sexually Abused

Melissa Mark-Viverito, the speaker of the New York City Council, revealed this week that she was the victim of sexual abuse as a child, saying at an emotional news conference that she was compelled to go public in reaction to the video in which Donald J. Trump is heard boasting about foisting himself on women.
“This is the first time I ever publicly talked about this,” Ms. Mark-Viverito said on Thursday, speaking to reporters at City Hall and appearing at times to hold back tears. “Twenty percent of young girls unfortunately experience some form of sex abuse and molestation.”

Black Catholic leaders want stronger church response to police killings

In the world of African-American Catholic life, San Antonio was the place to be July 5-9. The annual Archbishop Lyke Conference, named for the late former Atlanta archbishop James P. Lyke, was to explore and celebrate liturgy and worship in the black American tradition. The expectation was that there would be joyous song, praise, and dance at the meeting, held at the Oblate School of Theology.

Why Do “All Lives Matter” Armchair Commentators Disgust Me More after the Murder of Philando Castile?

Perhaps because I know where Falcon Heights is. Perhaps because he was my age, graduating high school the same year I did. Perhaps because by the grace of God I awoke from my cynical news slumber last night, when I heard and read and saw the report on the shooting of Philando Castile — after reading about the previous shootings and the ones previous to that. I immediately thought of a story I used to laugh at with my friend Eddie Bayard from Columbus, OH. He told the story of going into Wal-Mart to exchange a defective CD player.

The Powerful Catholic Case for a Preferential Option for Black Lives Matter

I stayed out of the fray of commenting on Black Lives Matter until yesterday, because we’ve been moving, not out of indifference.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure instead of giving the acting editor of Patheos Catholic comment on this important issue.

Archbishop shuts down parish over statue of rebel priest

MUMBAI — Ordinarily, a Catholic bishop anywhere in the world almost certainly would be delighted to see a spontaneous flowering of devotion to a recently deceased local priest.
The fact that an archbishop in India actually has shut down a parish rather than allow it to host a statue of one such priest, therefore, suggests circumstances in Bangalore are anything but ordinary.

Are People Emotionally Manipulating You? Here’s How to Stop it:

If you are reading this right now, then chances are you have been manipulated by someone at some point in your life.  There is also a good chance you are being manipulated right now.
Teachers, co-workers, relationship partners, friends, and family are usually the ones who end up manipulating us because we feel as though we can trust them.  Because we feel like we can trust them, we open ourselves up to persuasion, manipulation, and being emotionally abused by them.

Call for new probe into historic child abuse case

A former National Party leader and an author are now heading calls for an independent inquiry into a two decade old child abuse case.
Christchurch Civic Creche worker Peter Ellis was convicted on 13 charges in 1993. Don Brash and Lynley Hood argue it was a time when there was a "wave of child abuse hysteria".

Pope makes rare apology

In the United States, he said, people may find it hard, for example, to understand the church’s use of the phrase “intrinsically disordered” to describe same-sex attraction.
Although the ongoing Synod has indicated clearly that there is vibrant debate between “conservatives” and “progressives”, as evidenced by the release this week of a letter to the Pope from a handful of senior Cardinals strongly opposed to change, neither that same debate nor the letter come under the “scandal” category.

Technology complicating stalking, domestic violence abuse

These days, stalking isn’t just someone being followed or the stalker physically breaking into a home, according to a speaker at a domestic violence symposium on Friday.
Michelle M. Garcia, the director of the Stalking Resource Center in Washington D.C. and a speaker at the local symposium, said stalkers use cell phones, computers and GPS devices to go after their victims, generally women.

The Pope and the Birth Control Ban

Pope Francis has taken a softer line than some of his predecessors on sexual and reproductive issues. He has said that the church should concentrate less on same-sex marriage, contraception and abortion, and this month he announced that during the church’s coming Holy Year of Mercy, all priests would be able to grant absolution for abortion.
But the pope has not called for any actual changes to the church’s policy on birth control. The church prohibits contraception, though it does allow natural family planning, in which couples may avoid intercourse when a woman is most fertile. The pope reiterated his support for this prohibition in a speech in Manila earlier this year, arguing that “a lack of openness to life” threatens the family. Ordinary Catholics worldwide feel differently, and the pope should give them a forum to share their experiences.

Our dirty little secret - abuse of elderly

Elder abuse is gathering attention as the country's quiet crime, and one aged care specialist says not enough is happening to prevent it.
Meg McHugh, a registered nurse with 12 years' experience in aged care, including auditing roles, says New Zealand lags behind in its laws - something she was surprised about in a country that prides itself on its welfare systems. In Taranaki, 61 cases were reported in the past 10 months and it's believed this doesn't reflect the true size of the issue because, nationally, only about 18 per cent of cases are reported.

Violence on his former partner, who became so terrified she jumped out of a speeding truck, has landed Dargaville man Rapata Tipene in jail for six years. Tipene's presumption that the woman was sexually attracted to another man they had been drinking with prompted the attacks that left her with severe injuries.
Tipene, 43, was found guilty by a jury on charges of kidnapping, wounding with reckless disregard, threatening to kill and intentional damage. He appeared for sentencing in the Whangarei District Court.
