Child abuse 'NZ's dark side'

Ending child abuse is New Zealand's "Holy Grail", Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright told a conference today. Dame Silvia opened the 10th Australasian Child Abuse and Neglect Conference in Wellington by acknowledging the child abuse issue was not new to New Zealand. "There is a dark side to our bright country. So I welcome this opportunity to challenge the darkness while thanking those who seek to change it," she said

Glimmer of hope for Lake Alice state abuse survivors

Warning: This story contains distressing content. From January next year the Royal Commission will begin its inquiry into historical abuse in state care and faith-based institutions. One of the facilities under its microscope will be the notorious Lake Alice Child and Adolescent Unit. Despite 41 former Lake Alice patients making complaints of both physical and sexual abuse, police have never prosecuted anyone.

Catholic Church abuses under increasing scrutiny internationally and locally

Pope Francis and the Catholic Church are under increasing pressure for their woefully inadequate handling of sexual abuse by priests, and their many failures in trying to keep the abuses secret within the church. This is happening in many countries around the world, and has been highlighted as an insidious problem locally as well. It seems to be a systemic problem within the Catholic Church. A recent damning report in the US has prompted action there – Stirred by Sexual Abuse Report, States Take On Catholic Church

My soft cover book: They Promised Heaven But Led Me To Hell

My crime, in the eyes of the catholic church nuns, was that I was born ‘a bastard and a daughter of the devil. The punishments for my sins started when I was 18months old in the nursery by three ladies workers for the nuns which were repeated most nights up to the age of 5years old. My childhood was a life of abuse by nuns, the workers, older girls and a priest, the only way I could get through this was to be by myself or run away and hide, go and stay in the church and also climb as high as I could in the trees or jump the fences and hide in long grass. I also went to the police but that did me no good I was thrashed by the nuns when the police took me back to the orphanage.

NZ's underbelly of forced sex trade involves Kiwis as young as 12, researcher says

Academic and forced prostitution researcher Natalie Thorburn says sex trafficking is more common in NZ than people think after speaking with dozens of teenaged sex workers. Girls aged 12 or under are being forced into sex work in New Zealand, according to a Wellington-based researcher. Natalie Thorburn spoken to dozens of teenaged sex workers for her masters degree in social work at the University of Auckland, and said they told her of their lives on the streets selling sex when they were aged between 12 and 16.

Northland woman tells of abuse in orphanage

Beverley Lind arrived at the Orphans' Home Papatoetoe as a blonde, brown-eyed, 2-year-old. She left a broken and angry 15-year-old girl, after an abusive experience that has haunted her for decades. Now, aged 70, she finally feels free of the shame and guilt she has carried. She tells reporter Kristin Edge why. She called it the dungeon. It was a dangerous goods storage room under the stairs in the main hall. The huge metal door made a thud as it slammed shut and it was completely dark inside.

Faces of Innocents: 12 added to Child Victim Toll

In a major breakthrough, police have acknowledged the public interest in the project and provided information on 12 victims missing from the database.
The toll now stands at 223. The updated information - requested under the Official Information Act - was obtained in September last year after the Ombudsman intervened. It covers the period between 2004 and 2017. Police records are incomplete before that.

Campbell on the inquiry into the abuse of children in care

Apparently, PM Jacinda Ardern has chosen to exclude faith-based institutions from the government’s promised inquiry into the abuse of children in state care. Any role for religious institutions – eg the Catholic Church – would be only to observe and to learn from any revelations that arise from the inquiry’s self-limiting focus on state-run institutions: [Ardern] said the primary role of the inquiry was to look at the state's responsibility….She said any religious institution with concerns needed to look at the issue, ask what they have done about the issues and their own history.

Calls to include faith institutions in abuse investigation

Faith-based institutions need to be included when the government investigates the abuse of children in state care, says a psychologist involved with Australia's inquiry into abuse. The Labour-led government has promised to set up an inquiry and groups of survivors want its scope broadened. They are being backed by psychologist Michelle Mulvihill, who was a consultant to Australia's royal commission on institutional sex abuse.

Exclusive Brethren on trial for allegedly raping his son

Details about the culture of the secretive Exclusive Brethren church are to be revealed in court as a dedicated member stands trial for allegedly sexually abusing his son.

Jehovah's Witnesses claim they were told not to report child sex abuse, as organisation is accused of sheltering abusers

The recently elected New Zealand government has committed to establishing an inquiry into the abuse of children in state care during its first 100 days of office. The Maori Women’s Welfare League is urging ministers setting up the inquiry to consult widely, including with victim and survivor groups and organisations with a history of involvement in state ‘care’. As they have stated, such consultation is essential to ensuring the inquiry leads to systemic change that will prevent abuse in the future.

State Care Abuse inquiry pressure grows

Pressure on the Government to hold an independent inquiry into the systemic abuse of children and disabled adults held in state institutions has continued to grow, with a UN Human Rights Committee joining the calls for the true story to be told.
Late last month, the Commission welcomed the recommendations made by the United Nation Committee on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination, which included that the Government hold an independent inquiry into the systemic abuse of children and disabled adults held in state institutions.

Attacks on the credibility of abuse survivors are not justified by research

For a quarter of a century, the concept of “false memories” has provided a scientific fig leaf for sceptics of child sexual abuse allegations.
The “false memory” argument is deceptively simple: children and adults are prone to invent false memories of child sexual abuse that never occurred, particularly if encouraged by a therapist or some other authority figure. So-called “recovered memories”, in which adults recall sexual abuse in childhood after a period of amnesia, have been a particular focus of disbelief.

Special investigation: New Zealand'™s shameful record of child abuse

==================================
These children have died as a result of neglect, abuse, or maltreatment in New Zealand.  New Zealand remains one of the most dangerous countries in the developed world in which to grow up, despite efforts from successive governments.
Thirteen Kiwi kids have died in suspicious circumstances so far this year – one of the worst years on record and much higher than the annual average of nine.  Every second day, a child is admitted to hospital suffering from inflicted injuries, including burns, broken bones and head wounds – with Starship children's hospital in Auckland seeing more cases of serious abuse than ever before.

Foster child suicide: Lawyer for woman who killed herself after 55 placements calls for change

"Jolene" was physically, emotionally and sexually abused from infancy and was admitted to hospital more than 100 times. A former nurse told the ABC Jolene regularly self-harmed so she could be admitted to hospital, because it was the only place she felt safe.
Jolene was suing the Department of Community and Family Services (DOCS) for failing to protect her, but took her own life two weeks ago, before the case made it to court. She was 28. Her lawyer, Neisha Shepherd, said Jolene left a will and she planned to continue the court action, on behalf of her estate.
