Dead man’s estate files child sex abuse suit against nuns

The estate administrator of a former Catholic school student has filed a child sex abuse lawsuit against the Sisters of Mercy, which operated and managed the school. C.C., who is deceased, but is identified by pseudonymous initials to protect his identity, was allegedly sexually abused in the early 1980s while in the second grade at Santa Barbara Catholic School. He was allegedly molested by Raymond Cepeda, who was then an assistant pastor and religion teacher, and who also is now deceased.

Australia: On Appeal: Cardinal Pell Historic Child Sexual Abuse Case

Cardinal George Pell has long been a controversial figure in Australian society. To many he is a longstanding symbol of conservative Australian Catholicism whose aggressive reputation in respect of the defence of historical child sexual abuse cases involving the Catholic Church was confirmed during his testimony at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Catholic Church abuses under increasing scrutiny internationally and locally

Pope Francis and the Catholic Church are under increasing pressure for their woefully inadequate handling of sexual abuse by priests, and their many failures in trying to keep the abuses secret within the church. This is happening in many countries around the world, and has been highlighted as an insidious problem locally as well. It seems to be a systemic problem within the Catholic Church. A recent damning report in the US has prompted action there – Stirred by Sexual Abuse Report, States Take On Catholic Church

The Catholic Church’s Unholy Stain

It’s long past time for penitence and promises on clerical pedophilia. Pope Francis must act. ope Francis has summoned senior bishops from around the world for the first global gathering of Roman Catholic leaders to address the crisis of clerical pedophilia. The action is long overdue, and the outcome cannot be yet more apologies and pledges of better behavior. The unending revelations of clerical sexual abuse and cover-ups demand radical, public, convincing systemic change.

Report Reveals Widespread Sex Abuse of ‘Mostly Male Minors’ in German Catholic Church

A leaked sexual abuse commission report documents more than 3,500 cases of “mostly male minors” who were victims of clerical sex abuse in Germany between 1946 and 2014. The commission, which was funded by the German Bishops’ Conference, stated that “3,677 mostly male minors” had been victims of sexual abuse by 1,670 members of the clergy. The report also found systemic mishandling of allegations of sexual abuse by the German Catholic hierarchy.

Taking the Church to church: a religious institution with a sinful record of past indiscretion

I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church. I grew up being told that church was a safe space where you could strengthen your relationship with God, and that priests looked to help you achieve that goal. The image that was created in my childhood has been shattered; I never thought that these revered figures would use their power to sexually assault teenagers. The stories I’ve read over the past couple of months have made me question whether the Church will be able to truly fix the problems it faces.

Long Island LI diocese settles nearly 300 claims filed by clergy sexual abuse victims

Nearly 300 men and women will be compensated by the Diocese of Rockville Centre for the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of priests, in some cases decades ago. The diocese has received 293 claims since it established a special compensation program last fall, said Camille Biros, the program's co-administrator. So far, she said, 221 victims have been offered financial settlements and the others will receive offers within a few months. Most of the claims, Biros said, were filed by men. She would not comment on the number of priests accused of sexual abuse.

Some Scottish bishops call for investigation into Viganò’s claims Pope covered-up for abuser

A number of Scottish bishops agree that there should be an investigation following last month’s explosive testimony of Vatican whistleblower Archbishop Viganò. Bishop John Keenan of the Diocese of Paisley, echoing the thoughts of U.S. Bishop Robert Barron, released a message on August 31 saying that the abuse crisis is clearly diabolical. “It is clearly diabolical in origin – a masterpiece of the Devil to undermine every aspect of the Church’s evangelising mission,” he wrote.

My soft cover book: They Promised Heaven But Led Me To Hell

My crime, in the eyes of the catholic church nuns, was that I was born ‘a bastard and a daughter of the devil. The punishments for my sins started when I was 18months old in the nursery by three ladies workers for the nuns which were repeated most nights up to the age of 5years old. My childhood was a life of abuse by nuns, the workers, older girls and a priest, the only way I could get through this was to be by myself or run away and hide, go and stay in the church and also climb as high as I could in the trees or jump the fences and hide in long grass. I also went to the police but that did me no good I was thrashed by the nuns when the police took me back to the orphanage.

Bishop of Galloway says abuse scandal ‘blackens good name’ of Church

The catholic church never had a good name... she ruled with hate... fear.... abused... rape... control and greed... her god  and love is still MONEY... Ann
===================================

A Catholic bishop has said the case of a paedophile priest has “poisoned relationships” within the clergy and helped undermine the work of the Church. The Bishop of Galloway used a pastoral letter to express his concerns at the crimes of Father Paul Moore. Fr Moore, 82, was last week jailed for nine years for sexually abusing three children and a student priest over a 20-year period.

Chester Borrows: First World services elusive

LAST Saturday night I went to the movies here in Calgary to see a film reviewed in the newspaper the previous week. The plot was that of a young boy hidden from the authorities in the late 1950s as the government scoured the Canadian countryside removing native children from their parents and placing them in "the care of the state" — institutions known as residential schools.

AFN National Chief to seek audience with Pope

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde will seek an audience with Pope Francis just under a month after the pontiff refused to apologize for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools. “I am writing the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to seek a meeting and I am seeking an audience with Pope Francis directly as well,” Bellegarde said in a Thursday statement.

Pedophile Priests Preyed In Local Parishes

The pedophile priest scandal in Boston, a story told in the Oscar nominated movie Spotlight, earned the Boston Globe a Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for breaking the news. But pedophile priests were commonplace decades earlier on the East End, a story that has, for the most part, gone untold. As reported last week exclusively in The Independent — this newspaper has followed the story since 2003 —the Diocese Of Rockville Centre often sent priests accused of inappropriate behavior to eastern Long Island, believing they would blend in better in the sparsely-populated communities here.

Grandfather, 74, breaks six decades of silence to reveal he was raped by Irish nun who fell pregnant with child he's never known

A GRANDFATHER has told of how a depraved Irish nun raped him in a care home as a young boy before becoming pregnant with a child he has never met. Edward Hayes, 74, was sexually abused by Irish nun Sister Mary Conleth, real name Bessie Veronica Lawler, as a vulnerable youngster in the 1950s. The horrific crimes occurred while he was growing up at the John Reynolds Home in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, which was run by The Franciscan Missionaries of St Joseph – a Catholic congregation of nuns.

'We were innocent': How one survivor hopes to get justice for Duplessis Orphans

Now 62 years old, Marc Boudreau has come to accept that he will likely never find peace, or be able to live a normal life, after a childhood spent in institutions. Many days are a struggle for Boudreau, who still finds it difficult to talk about his past. "It was a stolen childhood, because we were children and we were innocent," he said. "We were defenceless."

Australia PM to deliver apology to child sex abuse victims

Late last year, a Royal Commission released a report based on a four-year inquiry that collected evidence from 8000 abuse survivors. They ranged in age from seven, to a person in their nineties.
The apology by Malcolm Turnbull will increase pressure on both state authorities and religious institutions to sign up to a scheme to compensate the victims. Mr Turnbull has announced he will make the apology by the end of the year, but says he needs time to speak with survivors first.

Abuse survivors on what they want out of inquiry: 'He admitted it ... I thought there would be consequences'

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Minister for Children Tracey Martin today outlined an inquiry into the historical abuse of children in state care.
Some have asked for this to be extended to abuse in other institutions. Ahead of the announcement three survivors detail what they would like to happen and why. "Some people show it emotionally. Other people have it kept inside them."

Abuse inquiry a chance to confront NZ's history - Ardern

What about us babies who were stolen from our mother's arms at birth... by the catholic church nuns... and the government paid for our keep???...  Ann
====================================
Minister for Children Tracy Martin said the draft terms of reference approved by Cabinet task the Royal Commission with looking into what abuse happened in state care, why it happened and what the impacts were, particularly for Māori.
The establishment of the Royal Commission into Historical Abuse in State Care meets an election commitment from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who took power in October. "If they experienced abuse and we as the caregiver of that child didn't know, didn't act, didn't make sure that we had checks in place to ensure the child was safe", said Ardern.

Opinion Larry Nassar shouldn't be the only one going to jail

Survivors reported Nassar’s abuse to coaches, trainers, parents, therapists, a training facility owner, and even law enforcement officials – but all in vain. It is tragically ironic that in the same month we applauded the courageous young survivors confronting Larry Nassar in court for his horrific abuse, we also celebrated the wisdom and legacy of the Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. One of King’s great lessons was that justice can be hindered by “the appalling silence of the good people”.
