Glenn urges more anti-violence measures

Sir Owen Glenn has welcomed the package of initiatives aimed at addressing family violence announced by the government, but warns they do not go far enough.
Earlier this month the Prime Minister announced a number of proposals targeting family violence that is responsible for nearly 50 per cent of New Zealand’s homicides. The measures included the establishment of a Chief Victims’ Advisor to the Minister of Justice, the trial of an intensive case management service for family violence victims, and the trial of mobile safety alarms with GPS technology.

Glenn inquiry: Bid to mend 'broken' court system

Sir Owen Glenn has nudged New Zealand one step closer towards a less adversarial justice system for domestic violence cases in a bid to fix a "broken" court system.
Lawyers said they were interested in exploring the issue after the first report of Sir Owen's $2 million independent inquiry into child abuse and domestic violence suggested a "review of the adversarial system that places an excessive burden of proof on victims".

Dump and run' culture at CYF

A damning report on Child, Youth and Family says children in state care are being moved up to 60 times between multiple foster carers because the agency is not giving enough attention to their long-term care.
The report by Children's Commissioner Dr Russell Wills, the first of what he plans as annual reports on Child, Youth and Family, also reveals that 117 children were abused last year while in CYF care.

NZ Bishops would support sex abuse investigation – PM says not necessary

Pull your head out of the sand KEYS... you have no idea... what it is like to be an abused child... until you do KEYS... button your lip... and go join Isis... you will fit in good with them... because that is the same way... you treat the abused children of New Zealand... Ann.

Archbishop John Dew, the Archbishop of Wellington New Zealand, and President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference says he supports the Royal Commission into institutionalised child abuse by priests announced in Australia.
Archbishop Dew said the NZCBC  would support any similar investigation in New Zealand. But the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key says he does not see the need for an inquiry into child sex abuse, similar to the one announced in Australia

The People’s Inquiry into Addressing Child Abuse and Domestic Violence

Child abuse and domestic violence have been occupying the minds of academics and policy- makers for a long time now in New Zealand. Reports have been written, recommendations made, and money spent, but the statistics keep getting worse.
Family violence continues to claim many lives and ruin many others. Cynics might say the Glenn Inquiry is just the latest in a long line of well- meaning attempts to solve an unsolvable problem. To the contrary, I believe it has every chance of being a real catalyst for change, not least because of The People’s Report.

Owen Glenn: Children more precious than Rugby World Cup

Well done New Zealand for planning, staging and creating a wonderful Rugby World Cup. Visitors from many nations have found us to be caring, warm, engaging, generous and hospitable. That's a reputation worth having and building on.
Why then are we not as caring as a nation when it comes to our own children and young people? When I look at the appalling statistics on child abuse and neglect, youth unemployment, crime and suicide I must agree with Dame Anne Salmond when she wrote in the Herald that "more than a change of government, what is needed is a change of heart".

Glenn report - judges need to be inquisitors on family violence

Call for agency to follow up on offenders and new alcohol law.  Sir Owen Glenn's long-awaited blueprint for tackling family violence wants judges in domestic violence cases to become European-style "inquisitors", questioning everyone involved to determine the truth and direct the outcome.
The two-year inquiry also proposes mandatory electronic tagging of people subject to protection orders, which are often derided as "just a piece of paper".

Glenn charity probe dumped

Failure to pursue case labelled “a cop-out".  Internal Affairs has abandoned an investigation into alleged irregular payments for a thoroughbred racehorse made by Sir Owen Glenn's charity.
After being under investigation for 18 months, the Glenn Family Foundation Charitable Trust charity was voluntarily deregistered on December1. The charities regulator launched an investigation after emails appeared to show payments from the Glenn Family Foundation to a bloodstock company and Sir Owen's personal bank account.
