The Catholic church needs to move on from archaic celibacy rule

OPINION: On a recent Monday morning I sat at the press desk in the Wellington District Court and watched as a former Catholic priest was sentenced to six years and seven months in prison for historical sex offences.
Peter Joseph Hercock left the priesthood in the 1980s. He is 72 now, and married with a son. But in the 1970s he was a chaplain and counsellor at Sacred Heart Girls' College in Lower Hutt. The four women who pursued complaints against him were then pupils in their early teens. They were grappling with personal problems or came from troubled home environments – sometimes both.

Former priest appears in court again; plans in works for inspection of church grounds

EDINBURG — A former priest accused of murder is set to revisit at least one of the locations the state says he held his victim in after attorneys met in court Monday.
John Bernard Feit was all smiles moments before a scheduled hearing Monday inside the 92nd state District Court.

Fear of horrific abuse is clearest Mount Cashel memory: former resident

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – There is one thing the elderly man most remembers about living at the Mount Cashel orphanage more than 60 years ago: fear.
“They had complete control over you,” he said of the Irish Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic order that ran the once-iconic institution in St. John’s, N.L. “You were beaten continually.

Archdiocese to Face Amended Sex-Abuse Suit

(CN) — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles is not off the hook for two men's claims that a monsignor molested them decades ago, a California appeals court ruled.
Juan H.J. Doe and Juan H.L. Doe claimed that Monsignor Benjamin Hawkes molested them from the mid-1970s to the early to mid-1980s. During that period, the boys were ages 14 through 21.  Hawkes, who died in 1985, "lavished them with meals, clothes, travel and money," according to court records. He also allegedly financed trips and paid for J. Doe's private school tuition.

Cusick, Lanza are voices of reason on childhood sex abuse (commentary)

This article is ridiculous.  The author knows little to nothing about childhood sexual abuse and beyond nothing about the experience of victims in the courts over the past several years.  Allowing victims to go to court to the age of 28 reveals the ignorance of Cusick, Lanza and Leddy about the dynamics of sexual abuse.  The average victim is 12 when violated.  The average victim takes 32 years before he or she can disclose and failure to disclose is not "failure" but an impossibility on the part of victims.
These three clowns have obviously never talked to a victim or even read a responsible professional article about the impact of child abuse.  Also, there have been a number of 75 year old victims who have filed cases and been successful because there has in fact been evidence. Leddy does not know that even if a victim is 75 or 85 or 95, a vile crime was committed against him and the scars remain and grow more painful and destructive with the passage of time.
The opponents of this bill, such as Tim Dolan and the other mitered wizards, deny the fact that all it does is allow people entrance to the court house.  It does not guarantee a successful case nor does it waive the evidentiary requirements for victims.
The only real opposition is the Catholic Bishops who are not, by the way, THE Catholic Church. They could care less about justice, available evidence, sex abuse in schools etc.  They are concerned about one thing:  the continued exposure of their failure and the failure of their predecessors to protect children and their criminal and sinful enabling of perpetrators.
The bishops' crusade against the bill and against sex abuse victims in general is narcissistic, selfish, unChristian and anti-Catholic.
They have conveniently forgotten that the Church which they all claim they love and support, does not stop with the bishops and clergy but is made up of the victims, their loved ones and those concerned for justice.  So...who are the bishops and their cheer leaders hurting by their grand standing and dishonest tactics?  The Church!

Catholics urge church to support New York legislation that allows child abuse victims to seek justice as adults

The Catholic Church’s powerbrokers should listen to their better angels! That was the message from city parishioners in favor of changing a law that prevents many victims of child sex abuse from seeking justice. Current state law prohibits the victims from bringing criminal charges or civil claims against abusers after the victim’s 23rd birthday.
“It should definitely be extended. It’s a terrible thing, and I know people who have had encounters and I feel very sorry for them. I don’t think that’s what our religion should be,” said Annette Gould, who attends Masses at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

SNAP: Catholic church does not ignore us

In the latest installment of an otherwise helpful series of articles, Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea paints a depressing and incomplete picture of the church's ongoing clergy sex abuse and cover-up crisis.
Because she's a therapist, she understandably focuses on the "healing" half of the crisis. But she gives remarkably short shrift, we feel, to the other and more pressing half: "prevention." And she also offers a very limited portrayal of our organization.

Statute of limitations law moving forward in Harrisburg

HOLLIDAYSBURG - The Diocese of Harrisburg sent out a letter warning its parishioners of financial hardship to the church if the statute of limitations changes.
The new law would allow for a victim of child abuse not over 50 to seek criminal investigations in their case and allow them to file civil lawsuits.

Founder of a Minuteman Border Group Is Convicted of Child Molestation

A founder of the now-disbanded Minuteman border patrol group has been convicted in Arizona of molesting a 5-year-old girl, bringing to an end a case that gained the attention of the nation’s highest court after he tried to cross-examine the young victim.
The defendant, Christopher Simcox, 55, was found guilty Wednesday of molesting the girl, who was a friend of his 6-year-old daughter, between April 21, 2012, and May 23, 2013, during visits to his apartment, the Maricopa County attorney, Bill Montgomery, said in a statement. Mr. Simcox was in the process of divorcing his wife at the time.

Pennsylvania: Legislators Pressured By Church on Sex-Abuse Measure

Roman Catholic legislators say they have been publicly shamed during Mass and disinvited from parish events as the Philadelphia Archdiocese campaigns against a bill that would give victims of child sexual abuse more time to sue the church.
State Representative Nick Miccarelli said he was shocked to learn that the weekly bulletin at his church targeted him. Under the headline “Just So You Are Aware,” the announcement read,

Kathy Redig: Winona Catholic clergy, laity are all victims of a broken system

Ever since the latest revelation of wrongdoing concerning Winona Catholic clergy this past week, I have struggled with how to best respond. I have prayed for all those involved, especially the victims, but it seems more is needed.
My feeling and that of others within the Catholic community is that it is time that the hierarchy of the Catholic church finally become truly honest with the People of God in this diocese and in all the dioceses around the world. It is time!

Priests, parishes target Pa. legislators who backed sex-abuse bill

HARRISBURG - One lawmaker called it "electioneering." Another grew emotional as she recounted being snubbed by a priest. A third wrote a Facebook screed that became the buzz of the House of Representatives.
Legislators expressed outrage this week after, they said, they had been named by priests at Mass or in parish bulletins, or in other ways rebuked by the Catholic Church, for supporting a bill to let child sex-abuse victims sue individuals and private institutions decades after the abuse occurred.
