Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, December 11, Google sent an email to everyone signed up to its “what’s trending in New Zealand” service.
In its subject heading, the generic no-reply email named the 26-year-old man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane, whose body was found by police on the outskirts of Auckland.
It said more than 100,000 searches had been made of the man’s name.
