The Catholic church wanted a priest who abused a boy in Burton to flee the country to avoid his imminent arrest, a child sex abuse inquiry has heard.
A young clergyman said he was asked to give Father Samuel Penney "hundreds of pounds" and to ask him to leave the country for Ireland before travelling to America.
Reverend Father Gerard Doyle was a young priest in his first parish when he said he was told by senior churchman, Vicar General, Monsignor Daniel Leonard, to help Penney.
