Most cases of sexual harassment are handled quietly and privately. If they occur in a workplace, the perpetrators are disciplined, sometimes fired. Only rarely, when someone files a lawsuit, are harassment situations made public.
Last week, yet another alleged instance of abuse by someone in the Roman Catholic hierarchy, Bishop Michael J. Bransfield, came to light.
For 13 years, Bransfield has presided over the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in West Virginia. His work was appreciated enough that a hospital named its continuous care center for him. A high school also put his name on its gymnasium.
