MY PARENTS DIDN’T like Father Ted. They didn’t
get it. If my Mum and Dad were alive today they’d be in their 80s. They
were a generation that grew up in an Ireland dominated by the Catholic
Church. For my parents, Fr Ted was like a fly on the wall documentary
about priests. They couldn’t laugh at it. They couldn’t enter into the
comedic spirit of it. They simply couldn’t suspend disbelief in order to
laugh at Fr Ted, Fr Jack and Fr Dougal.
