According to a court order in a civil case between Penn State University and an insurance company, a child told Joe Paterno in 1976 that he had been sexually molested by Jerry Sandusky. The legal document also said unnamed
assistant coaches allegedly witnessed Sandusky having inappropriate
contact with children in the late 1980s, and a child's report of being
molested by Sandusky allegedly was referred to Penn State's athletic
director in 1988.
Sara Ganim (who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for her Sandusky reporting) interviewed for CNN Sandusky’s oldest known victim, who says his foster parents called Penn State officials to report he had been raped by Sandusky in a Penn State bathroom in 1971. When the victim, then 15, found himself on the phone with two men from Penn State — one of whom he believed to be Paterno — they dismissed his story and threatened to report him to the authorities. Paterno had said the first time he had heard a complaint against Sandusky was in 2001. Penn State has paid out more than $90 million to settle more than 30 civil claims involving Sandusky, who is serving 30 to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing 10 children.
