"A tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems". –Pope Benedict XVI, 17 March 2009.
The papacy has often found itself on the wrong side of changing times, especially when it comes to matters relating to sexuality and tolerance. Pope Benidict’s(pictured above) remarks on the AIDs problem in Africa on the eve of this trip to Cameroon caused widespread criticism, and he was forced to backtrack. This wasn’t the only problem the papacy had to face in his term, he was dogged by a series of crises and controversies on issues ranging from child abuse, Islam and homosexuality to the Holocaust – which isn’t surprising considering the conservative views held by most of the catholic clergy.
