Oslo bishop wants to separate Catholic marriage from civil ceremony to avoid marrying gays OSLO (ChurchMilitant.com)
- Bishop Bernt Eidsvig of Oslo is saying his priests should stop
officiating civil weddings while conducting Catholic marriages. He's
doing so to protect his priests from eventually being ordered by the
state to perform so-called same-sex marriages.
In Norway, as in the United States, a priest signs the the couple's civil marriage certificate after they receive the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. In this way the clergy is acting as agents of the state in conducting civil marriages.
