San Antonians who best knew Father Virgilio Elizondo, the
friendly-faced religious scholar, beloved priest, celebrated professor
and author of numerous books, used words such as "devastated" and
"shocked" to describe their feelings about his death Monday from a
self-inflicted gunshot wound.
For them, the San Antonian who grew up on the city's West Side will be remembered as the altar boy at Christ the King Catholic Church, the Eagle Scout, the boy whose studious nature made him a role model for other Mexican-Americans reaching for higher education and professions at a time when institutions rejected them.
