Tupua Urlich sharing his experiences about life as a foster child to
support the We Don't Stop Caring campaign. He wants to be a productive
member of society and to live a happy life. "We don't want to just be
survivors of our own childhood and upbringing."
Recovering in hospital after a suicide attempt, Tupua Urlich looked around and saw only an empty room. "I realised I was all alone," the Papatoetoe teenager and former foster child says. That's one of numerous reasons the 19-year-old is backing a petition to raise the age at which a young person must leave state care from 17 to 21.
