Hispanic, white Catholics differ on church policy, nature of sin, survey finds

When Argentina-born Pope Francis arrives in Washington on Tuesday for his long-awaited three-city American tour, he will find a church in transition, sharply divided along ethnic lines on key policies regarding marriage and sex and even the definition of sin.
The stark divide between Hispanic and white Catholics revealed in a survey released Monday by the Pew Research Center hints at changes that have rattled a denomination that once claimed as members about one-fourth of the U.S. population.
