Less idealizing means more recognition of the need to forgive and more willingness to see that Francis, like myself, is a work in progress. One of my seminary teachers once commented that every boy is shocked when he realizes that his mother needs to use deodorant.
The professor’s point was that we all have idols, that they are, in spite of our idealization, fallible, and that it is always a shock to realize that. One such shock has come to those of us who have tended to idolize Pope Francis.
