Re “Dilution of Doctrine,” by Ross Douthat (column, Sept. 18):
It
never ceases to amaze me how flexible conservative Catholics’ view of
papal authority can be. When they like what a pope says, they extend his
authority to the farthest reaches of subjects and to any format in
which a statement is made.
