Royal Commission criticises Catholic Church response to abuse victims

THE Sydney Catholic Archdiocese had more than $1 billion in assets by 2013, but spent only a fraction on compensation to victims of child sexual abuse, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has found.
The archdiocese recorded annual surpluses of between $3.5 million and $43.9 million between 2002 and 2007 while it ‘‘vigorously’’ fought a Towards Healing claim and legal case by child sexual abuse victim John Ellis. During that period the archdiocese paid only $1.2 million in compensation to victims.
